District Installations

Valrico Service League Installation

Temple Terrace Juniorette Installation

As Junior District Director one of my responsibilities is to perform New Member and Board installations when asked. It is a privilege and a lot of fun to be a part of a clubs special event.

Over the last few months I have participated in the installations for the Tampa Juniors, the Valrico Service League and the Temple Terrace Juniorrettes. It was a wonderful experience meeting more of the members of these different clubs and hearing about all the great things their members have accomplished over the last club year and the things they plan to accomplish in the next year.

I wish all the clubs in District 8 a wonderful club year.

April 24th is Federation Day

GFWC Founder Jane Cunningham Croly

GFWC Federation Day is an annual celebration of the General Federation of Women's Clubs, which was officially formed on April 24, 1890, in New York, N.Y.

The history of GFWC is traced back to 1868, when a pioneering woman journalist named Jane Cunningham Croly (1829-1901) sought to attend a dinner honoring British novelist Charles Dickens at an all-male press club. Croly was denied admittance based upon her gender, in response, she formed a club for women. In 1890, Croly extended an invitation to women's clubs throughout the United States to attend a convention in New York City. Representatives from 63 clubs from throughout the nation attended the convention and took action to form the General Federation of Women's Clubs.

In honor of GFWC founder Jane Croly the GFWC Tampa Junior Woman's Club have organized a writing workshop to take place on April 24th at 10am at the GFWC Tampa Woman's Club. Personal historian and author Paula Stahel of Breath and Shadows will be leading a 3hr workshop on life writing. Sometimes Fundraising is FUN!

Temple Terrace Juniors at Keel & Curley Wine Tasting

Tampa Juniors at Keel & Curley

When I last left you I was looking forward to a busy November. We had lots of fun at all our volunteer events. Light the Night didn't go as planned but the dinner event with the girls from HCCS was a lot of fun, and Starlett taught us some etiquette lessons. The Thanksgiving meeting with the Juniorettes was a big success, we even had 7 members of the Woman's Club attend.

But as I stated it isn't always work. We also had our Wine Tasting fundraiser at Keel & Curley, it was a lot of fun and our fundraising committee did a wonderful job. With your ticket you got to sample 6 types of wine and get a full glass. There was yummy finger foods and a saxophone player that really added another level of entertainment to the event. As additional fundraising we had baskets up for raffle. The fundraising committee did a great job putting these together and getting donations, the baskets looked terrific.

Our next fundraiser will be a ghostwalk with details to be announced soon. I hope to see you there.

Faces of Courage

Since October is Breast Cancer Awareness month it seemed like a good time to tell you about an organization we volunteered with in September. Faces of Courage is a non profit cancer support organization that, at no cost to the participants, provides programs, day outings, overnight camps and end of "chemo parties".

The Juniors volunteered at the Woman's Cancer Retreat event, this was an overnight retreat being held at the Rotary Camp Florida in Brandon. We hosted the Death by Chocolate dessert buffet. I asked our members to provide chocolate baked goods for this event and they delivered! I have never seen so many yummy looking chocolate desserts in one place.

When the Juniors arrived at camp the ladies were in another building have a dance party and a tackiest tourist contest. The Juniors took a quick walk over to see the fun and watch the final judging of the contest. These ladies were having fun but it was almost time for chocolate. We were all set up when they started to come in. You could tell they were enjoying it because the kept "sneaking" back up for seconds. They welcomed and thanked us and we spent some time talking to these strong women. It was then time to clean up and say goodbye, it was getting late and these ladies had yoga in the morning.

I hope the Juniors can volunteer with this organization again the future.

Fall Board Junior Fun Night

Twice a year the Florida Federation holds convention in Orlando. All the Woman's Club and Juniors Club members descend on the Rosen Plaza for a weekend of workshops, meetings and most of all fun. The first convention of the year is Fall Board, and the Tampa Juniors were there.

Friday night is Junior Fun Night and this year's theme was Mama Mia. We were encouraged to dress up and this year the Tampa Juniors went ALL OUT. My partner in crime Diana urged me to go forward with our "dancing queen" costume ideas. We arrived in our room Friday evening, ordered pizza and got to work. Diana was in charge of iron-ons and I was making a tutu for everyone. When the other Juniors, Grace and Brandi, got to the room we all cleaned up, got dressed, donned our tiaras and headed downstairs.

We felt like we were famous, everyone was pointing and waving and calling us over to get a closer look at our outfits. It will be hard to top the "dancing queens" at Spring Convention but I am sure we will try!
